What are the benefits of using biological products in an oil production operation?
The major benefit is increased oil production. In addition to the added oil, operators typically see reduced maintenance expense, reduced wear and tear on pumps and equipment, improved oil characteristics, improved flow line performance, reduced operating costs and, in some cases, federal tax credits. And of course, all the products are 100% safe to use, environmentally compatible and leave low carbon imprints.
What is the usual application method?
Almost all treatments are bullheaded in without modifying the existing well configuration. Treatments can either be pumped down the annulus or applied through the tubing depending on the well setup and type of lift. In some cases coiled tubing is used to improve placement, however, it is usually unnecessary.
How do the biological applications differ from techniques like hot oiling, chemicals and cutting?
These standard oilfield practices are used to temporarily fix production problems. Biologicals are quite distinct from these methods in that they are long-term solutions whose benefits can last for months at a time and work continuously to achieve significant changes in the near-well-bore area and in the oil itself. Viewed in another way, the biologicals set up shop in the near well-bore area and produce ketones, alcohols, surfactants and other chemical reactants which eliminate the need for the operator to supply them. It’s like having a chemical factory in each well.
What are the operating restrictions to utilizing biologicals?
For the most part there are very few. Micro-Bac’s products can endure temperatures as high as 270°F and chloride content can be up to 10% (100,000ppm). Biologicals are much safer and have fewer handling and use restrictions than chemicals, hot oiling methods, diesel or xylene flushes and most other common oilfield methods.
How can one product produce these results over a wide variety of production practices in a multitude of different production scenarios?
The products you receive for your oil field project are custom blended for your specific well conditions and desired results. Our product line, the latest technology for increased production, consists of five main products with numerous applications.
Where has this technology been successfully applied?
Since commercial introduction in 1986, Micro-Bac’s products have been used all over the world; from Venezuela to Malaysia, from China to Canada, from the mid-Continent to the Slope, and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Guinea. To date, successfully treated wells number in the thousands, worldwide.
Is special equipment required?
No. The equipment required is dependent on how the application is being achieved; however, most applications can be completed with standard oilfield equipment such as pump trucks. Workover rigs are not required.
What is the cost of the product for a ‘typical’ application?
In the worldwide oilfield, ‘typical’ is hard to find; perforation interval, formation porosity, oil characteristics, product concentration and formation penetration all factor into the treatment equation. If one assumes a 50’ perforation interval, a 3’0” formation penetration, a product concentration of 50,000ppm, 25% porosity and average oil characteristics, the product usage in a one-time treatment will be 2.5 drums (135 gallons) of Para-Bac product. A one-time treatment will produce results for 90-270 days, sometimes longer.
Do the products need nutrients or other additives for maximum results?
No. The biological products are delivered in ready-to-use form with the necessary nutrients already in place. In most cases the biologicals are chased with production water or KCL (2-3%). In water sensitive formations, our technical staff will work out alternative methods on a case-by-case basis
How do the products work? What are the mechanisms?
Production stimulation works by several mechanisms; removal of hydrocarbon deposits from the formation, reduction in oil viscosity and changes in wettability. These changes are produced by the byproducts of the microorganisms which include bio-surfactants, solvent molecules and other agents.
Will Micro-Bac’s product damage my wells?
Will Micro-Bac’s product damage my wells?
Will your products cause souring or production of H2S?
No. Souring and production of H2S (hydrogen sulfide) are caused by a special group of microorganisms called sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). Our products contain no SRB and use of our products does not lead to souring.
How long will a treatment last?
How long a treatment lasts depends on the type of treatment and well specifics. Repairing frac damage can last for the life of the well. Beneficial effects of stimulation treatments normally last 3 – 9 months, and sometimes longer. Maintenance treatments are usually much smaller than stimulation treatments, and usually should be repeated every 1 – 3 months.
Why do I have to shut my well in after treatment?
Biological treatments work best if the microbes are allowed to grow or “colonize” the wellbore and formation before resuming production. The shut-in period is normally 3 – 7 days depending on the well conditions and treatment design. During this growth phase the microorganisms multiply and produce beneficial products.
Will microbes work in depleted wells or wells with high water cut?
Yes. Biotechnology can be effectively applied throughout the life of the well. Each well must be evaluated separately for its potential. However, Micro-Bac’s technology can be successfully applied to new wells for initialization, and to depleted wells with high water cut.
Will microbes work in high-rate wells?
Yes. We’ve had impressive results from treatment of wells producing more than a thousand barrels of fluid per day. In fact, production from one well peaked at over 5,000 barrels of oil per day after we treated it!
