Bioremediation of Dicyclopentadiene
An external floating roof tank containing more than 27 feet of water (48,000 barrels) had a layer of oil about three feet deep floating on the surface. One chemical in the water, dicyclopentadiene, a pesticide, was found in concentrations in excess of 600ppm (a potential health hazard). In addition, an offensive odor was emitted into the surrounding community.
A 3″ air-actuated diaphragm pump was connected in existing plumbing. The tank was inoculated with M1000H* microbes and nutrients. The liquids in the tank were circulated for two days to insure distribution of the microbes throughout the tank.
After 17 days, samples were taken from the tank for testing. The odor had dramatically reduced, and lab results indicated the dicyclopentadiene was below detection levels, or less than 1ppb. With the health hazard removed and only a slight odor remaining, the tank was drained through a charcoal filter to a concrete trench leading to the disposal system. This removed the remaining odor.
The exposure risk from the hazardous pesticide was eliminated. The client recovered all of the 5,400 barrels of crude oil that had been floating on the water, which netted a profit on the project.
